Image annotations from the datathon “Vom Polygon zum Datenset”
From 27 June to 11 July 2023, the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin organized a datathon as part of a teaching collaboration with the Department of Art History at Freie Universität Berlin. Nine participants in the practical seminar Tempus fugit? Models of Time, Image Times, and Images of Time in Franco-Flemish Calendars, taught by Prof. Dr. Karin Gludovatz, annotated 48 depictions of the Labors of the Months in four digitized manuscripts from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries held by the Berlin State Library.
The annotation work was carried out using an annotation tool developed within the Mensch.Maschine.Kultur project, Subproject 2: Image Analysis Tools for the Exploration of Digital Cultural Heritage. The final quality assurance was conducted by the Stabi Lab organizing team.
The dataset contains image regions corresponding to individual motifs and iconographically interpreted image subjects, together with their associated ICONCLASS notations. The data are available in both TEI XML and JSON formats.
