Keynote Lecture: The Politics of the Library

We are happy to announce the keynote lecture “The Politics of the Library” at the kick-off meeting of our workshop “Critical Library Perspectives. A Digital Scholar’s Lab” on May 4th, 2022, 3 p.m. (CET).


Emily Drabinski (CUNY Graduate Center, New York City)

Emily Drabinski is Critical Pedagogy Librarian and Interim Chief Librarian at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City. She has published and presented widely on issues related to power and the organization of information. Drabinski co-edited Critical Library Instruction: Theories & Methods (Library Juice Press/Litwin Books, 2010) and edits Gender & Sexuality in Information Studies for that press.

Annie Pho (University of San Francisco Library)

Annie Pho is the Head of Instruction and Outreach Department at  the University of San Francisco Library. She has a Bachelor’s in Art History from San Francisco State University and a Master’s in Library Science from IUPUI. She is the co-editor for the book Pushing the Margins: Women of Color and Intersectionality in LIS, as well as the co-editor of the Critical Race and Multiculturalism Series for Library Juice Press. Her research interests include intersectionality and women of color in LIS, and feminist/critical pedagogy in information literacy instruction. She was a 2013 ALA Emerging Leader, a participant in the 2014 Minnesota Institute for Early Career Librarians, the recipient of the 2018 JCLC Rising Star award for APALA, and in 2019 she received the ACRL WGSS Significant Achievement Award for her work on the book, Pushing the Margins: Women of Color and Intersectionality in LIS.

A Digital Scholar’s Lab

From May 4 to June 21, the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and the Universitätsbibliothek der Freien Universität Berlin jointly organize the interdisciplinary digital workshop “Critical Library Perspectives. A Digital Scholar’s Lab”.

Contrary to a widespread perception, libraries are by no means neutral places where knowledge is “only” collected and made accessible. For daily library work such as acquisition, classification, and presentation of media is characterized by valuation, selection, and standardization. These practices can thus be understood as epistemic, i.e., knowledge- and cognition-related processes. They always carry the danger of exclusion and discrimination of elements that do not conform to the applied normative schemes and can thus stand in the way of a diversity-oriented knowledge organization.

We are looking for scholars (at all career stages) from the humanities and social sciences as well as for librarians who are interested in collaboratively carrying out an interdisciplinary case study based on an example from the library world, and in jointly writing a short article on their findings.
